Gaturiri is an exceptional cooperative coffee produced by 1500 smallholders that highlights the finest qualities of Nyeri County, Kenya. Cultivated under the careful management of the Barichu Farmers Cooperative Society, this community-driven wet mill brings unique and outstanding characteristics to every cup. This special, complex and lively coffee from our friends at Volcafe is available in 200g and 250g bags.

Gaturiri is located in the Mathira Division, immersed in a lush region that boasts deep red volcanic soils rich in organic matter, creating the perfect terroir for coffee. The county itself centres around a hill historically known to the indigenous Kikuyu as “Kia-Nyiri,” while the factory’s name, Gaturiri, beautifully translates to “the shrubs,” honouring a traditional local gathering place for medicinal herbs.

To ensure the highest quality, Gaturiri employs a meticulous and highly controlled wet processing method using fresh water drawn from the nearby River Kirigu. After the ripe red cherries are selectively handpicked and sorted on patios, they are pulped and undergo an overnight fermentation process. The beans are then thoroughly washed in gently sloping tiled channels—a crucial step where repeated hand-shunting expertly separates the denser, high-quality coffee—before being patiently sun-dried on raised tables to the perfect moisture content.
